The Silver Pouch

When I asked you who your favorite fictional characters were, you brought on a really cool list of who you fell in love with, who you wanted to be like... and we even touched on the difference between love and lust.

*wicked smile*

But love and lust go hand in hand for me - I didn't marry Skinny Ass for just his good looks, you know. ;)

lol - when we first got together, my girls were all like, "And how the HELL did you two hook up?"

Opposites attract, that's for sure. It's kinda neat to compare personality traits, see what makes the other one tick. Or how to tick 'em off. ;)

But before we got hitched, I was never the type to go ga-ga over anyone. Hell - we went to a Cultural Event and saw one of our famous Filipino Celebrities just outside the theatre, signing autographs.

All the girls were all up on him, screaming his name... And what did I do?

I just walked on by. Didn't even give him a sideways glance.

I'm the same bitch at the bar, drink in hand. You'd better think twice before coming up to me, WITH your game on.

For real, though, it's easy to turn me off. Show me just a hint of arrogance, immaturity - or insensitivity? I don't care how damn fine you are - take your ass outta my face if that's how you're gonna play.

Damn... I'm SO glad to be out of the singles scene...

One thing though, since I'm not in the game anymore... I'm finding out how much fun it is playing the foolish girl. The last time we went to Sin City, Skinny Ass and I went to see Zumanity. You know, the sensual side of Cirque de Soleil?

And then out came Bronco.

Hot DAMN. That man can mooooove.

I may not be the type to fall for guys with hair longer than mine, but it sure was fun hootin' and hollerin'. So after the show, when we saw him posing for pics, I just had to get me a souvenir.

Skinny Ass just shook his head at me in laughter and snapped this picture for me.

He's dubbed it "The Silver Pouch."

Mr. Darcy, Achilles or Hector?

You know what I love about watching movies?

Getting lost. Lost in the drama. In the emotion. Lost in a world not my own. It's an escape from the troubles within my mind. My soul.

Shit. An escape from the pressures of mothering 3 boys (sometimes 4), working my day job from home, and attempting to manage a household all at once.

Attempt. Which means there are toys where they shouldn't be, dust on the cabinets, dishes in the sink and unpaid bills on the countertop. lol - I used to idealize family dinners where we'd all sit around the table, catch up on the day's events... I even imagined he'd kiss me in the morning before leaving for work, and upon returning, he'd kiss me hello and ask me how the day went.

Yeah, I know. Completely naive.

But yesterday, I found out that Mama hadn't seen "Pride & Prejudice" yet, so I HAD to put it on for her. It didn't matter that I'd seen it 17 times already. I fall in love with it over, and over, and over again.

Mama said she'd pick Mr. Bingsley. "Mr. Darcy's too intimidating," she says. Me? I don't even bat an eye. Mr. Bingsley is cute in his sweet, goofy way. But bring on Mr. Darcy's passion any day.

Then, next goes in "Troy." And while you think it might be Brad Pitt's character that does it for me (how could we forget Achilles?!), you are dead wrong.

It's Hector whom I fall in love with. A man who stands for love and honor, a man who thinks of his family, his father and his countrymen, brave to the bone. A smart and admirable man who keeps his feet on the ground, level-headed and dependable, forever protecting his wife and son.

It's not even about looks. It's beyond that. It's a person's heart, their character, what they stand for... which decides - for me - if they're beautiful.

And Hector is effen gorgeous.

So can you guess who Hector reminds me of?

lol - I told Skinny Ass that he's my Hector. And apparently, I'm his Lucy Liu. In any movie.

What about you? What fictional characters have you fallen in love with?

Got Tequila?

Lol - I just love that. Jose Cuervo or Silver Patron - bring it on, baby.

Hubz and I noticed that my drink choice tends to go with my mood. If I'm lookin' just to chill and relax, I'll have a Grey Goose and Seven. Feelin' girly? Cosmopolitan. A glass of wine with dinner? Merlot or a Reisling with dessert.

But if I'm in the mood to par-tay... I reach for the silver and gold.

What about you? What's your favorite drink?

Props to Jay at Dat Money for these snazzy new designs!
He was totally cool - whipped 'em up in a flash and even made a couple of revisions for me. Who's down for shots?!

Movie Review | War Dance

The term "documentary" does not give this film justice... The images in this film are so vivid... the emotions, so raw... someone sneezed onscreen and I actually caught myself whispering, "Bless y-."

In several poignant moments, I had forgotten about my tub of popcorn and sat motionless as I stared transfixed onto the screen, in awe of these resilient children tugging at my heart.
What worries do I have in my life compared to the hell they've lived through?

Still not convinced? Check out their Official Site and turn the volume up. I'd join you but I'm still counting my blessings over here...

My Rating: 4.0 Stars (out of 5)

About the Film from WarDance.org
by Jenni Robison

"War/Dance is a new documentary movie about three brutalized children of Northern Uganda and their dream of musical expression. The documentary is set amidst the violence of the Lord’s Resistance Army (L.R.A.), who kidnap sleeping children to abuse them and force them into rebellion and murder, sometimes even murder of their own families. Despite the horror, War/Dance has captured a beautiful story about the epic, unbreakable spirits of these children."

Movie Review | Gone Baby Gone

Man, this one sure got me and the hubby talkin'.

If you're a fan of Mystic River, then you won't be disappointed in Gone Baby Gone. The twists and turns most certainly do not disappoint, and I can promise you, that by the end of the movie, you'll be as torn and confused as the characters on screen, asking yourself the same question: "What would you do?"

Was this movie worth my 2 hours? Fo' sho.

MY RATING: 4.0 stars (out of 5)

Have you seen it? What did you like/hate about it the most?

The Plot from Movies.About.com

When 4-year-old Amanda McCreary goes missing her aunt and uncle turn to the private detective team of Patrick (Casey Affleck) and Angie (Michelle Monaghan) to help bring her home. The child's mother, Helene (Oscar nominee Amy Ryan), is an addict who seems more worried about her next score than she does getting her child back. Once Patrick and Angie take on the case, they quickly find out why Helene's acting so strangely. Helene's got quite a story to tell and the private investigators soon find themselves immersed in a deadly game of cat and mouse as they try and figure out where the truth lies and exactly what happened to young Amanda.

Note: While I love reading quick reviews to help me decide yay or nay, I can't STAND to have the plot given away - unless I'm specifically looking for it. No spoilers here.

Tuesday Toot | Book Club Makeover

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had started a local book club – for a couple of crazy reasons. Well (lol) I guess I’m getting a little adventurous, coz I decided to give my book club blog a total makeover.

Whoo-hoo! Hope you check it out – it’s actually a Book and Movie Fan Club – mostly coz I like to lose myself in both. ;)

Do you belong to a Book Club or Movie Club? Or what about... a virtual book club? I've never done that before?!

Happy Tootin’ Tuesday!

Silly, Silly Girl

I am sitting at the kitchen table trying desperately to finish "The Time Traveler's Wife" before book club tonight. Work is on hold after a couple of hours, and the Wii is babysitting my monsters for the moment.

Dry, shaken sobs start to rack through me as I near the end of the book. I know what's going to happen. It even tells you it's going to happen. But as the words in front of me take shape in my mind, in my heart...

I can't help but feel like I KNOW these people. They're not characters in a book anymore, they're people you've gotten to know in the last 500 pages. I've been talking to them silently in my head as I've been catching up with them, laughing out loud, causing hubby to take a curious peek at me.

Silly, silly girl. It's just a book. What are you crying for? I laugh at myself, at the sight of me. At the idea of it. I need to break up these emotions, take the edge off... and stuff my face with fries to keep my tears at bay.

Now I really AM a sight to see.

I imagine one of my sons hopping in to the kitchen, ready for lunch... stopping in his tracks and apprehensively coming to my side to ask, "Why are you crying, Mom?"

Because of a book?

"Because your Mom is a dork. That's all."

(sigh) But I ain't ashamed. ;)

Any other book lovers out there?

Meeting the King of Pop

Do you ever get star struck? Drawn to people icons and catching up on celebrity gossip? I remember back in high school - EVERYONE seemed to work at Seaport Village. We'd all head over on the weekends and hang out, some of us working, some of us not. ;)

Rachel worked at the Jolly Lolly back then, and was closing up shop. The doors were already locked - I was just outside one door, and some other people waiting at the door on the other side. She lets me in first, and now I can see that some BIG Mutha is outside the other door. Rachel goes on over to open the door for him. NO IDEA who he was.

"Rae! WTF?!"

She "shushes me" and proceeds to unlock it. Acting a little - strange, tentative.

But BIG Mutha had stepped aside, and in walks some weirdo with a satin red mask on his face, holding on to his arm candy.

OMG - Michael Jackson needed a sugar fix.

---

(Continued...)

It took me a half second to realize that MICHAEL JACKSON and PRISCILLA PRESLEY were right in front of me, browsing through the candy jars.

So what did we do? We did our jobs - squealed - as quietly as we could - like the high school girls we were. But this b*tch, Rachel, kinda lost it when they were ready to pay.

It'd be neat if I could remember what they bought, but mostly I remember BIG Mutha bustin' out the cash to pay for the candy, and all of a sudden, this high pitched shriek coming out of nowhere.

Rachel: "Aaaaahhhhhhhh!!!"

Somehow, she had lowered herself to the floor and a giggle escaped from her as she stood up with a smile and said, "Oh sorry. I just had to get that out." Classic.

That was all we needed - it broke the ice, we got his autograph (now WHY didn't we ask for Priscilla's???) and we were high for a month. I'm still trippin' that she made Michael Jackson WAIT instead of me - lol!!

Do you watch "Randy Jackson Presents: America's Best Dance Crew?" They did a tribute to the "Thriller" album in honor of its 25th anniversary - and d*******mmmmmn... Jabbas Rule!!

I don't know about our girl on Idol though, Ramiele... I really hope she sticks with it, but it's like she's holding back or something. Nervous? Come on, girl - don't let us down!

Check out the Jabbas P.Y.T. routine above - they definitely know how to bring it.

Did you say book club?

I started a book club a few months ago. Yes - it's that dull over here. Don't get me wrong - this town has done wonders for us (miracles actually!) since we've moved here. There's just... not a whole lot to do locally for fun.

So I created a blog for the book club, set up flyers around town and even posted it on craigslist. Two months later, not one response.

"Forget this," I thought to myself. I had started Candipops by then, so when I got my first phone call about it, I was pretty much ready to give up on it.

But she talked me out of it. "Give it time," Diana suggested. "You're from San Diego? We just don't move as fast over here."

Today we have a dozen girls in the club. Technically, it's a Book and Movie Club, just because I love both. So we pick one movie and one book per month, and get together every 2 weeks or so.

And I looooove it!

I work from home, so I don't get to leave the house and kids behind for an office and camraderie. All of my work is done via e-mail or conference calls, so this was a whole new way for me to connect with the outside world. Hearing different viewpoints, learning about other countries, cultures and their way of life? It's like brain candy that tugs at your heart.

And even better? Friends to share it with.

Do you belong to a book club? Or movie club - or both? What are you currently (or just finished) reading?

Ramiele Malubay

Does anyone watch American Idol? I have to admit I TiVo it. (I LOVE TiVo!!) I may not have the chance to watch it when it's on, but when I finally get to sit down on the couch, I don't want to waste time surfin' thru channels or watching commercials. I'll bring up my List, which this year, includes the show I've stayed away from in years past.

We caught the show live last time, and while I have a couple of favorites from this year's Top 24, it was trippy to see a Pinay up there on stage!!! Not a bad singer at all and cute as a button, we had to vote for her. Except... I wasn't too thrilled with her "Hair and Make Up" answer.

Come on, girl - you're representin'!! Did you see Simon's face? Not pleased. Not pleased at all.
